Message from the President of
Old Town Toronto (Promotional) Alliance

It is my pleasure to announce that Old Town Toronto will be celebrating its annual Heritage Festival on November 6 and 7, 2009.

Join in a Victory Party to experience Canadian history as told by the heroes of the War of 1812 and the Farmers’ Rebellion. Enjoy a tasting of heritage bread, wine and cheese, preserves & fruit as served in the 1800’s. Laura Secord, Fitzgibbon and Tecumseh welcome you in our gaslit Great Hall.

The Old Town Toronto Alliance knows it is not just the old bricks and stones which have survived till this day, but the people, events and even the gossip that filled that time in history. The 1812 Great Canadian Victory Party will bring the events during the War of 1812-1814 to life as you become an honoured guest at a ‘party’ featuring some of the hero’s and characters of the War. This is a light hearted dramatization of the events that may have happened if such a celebration had occurred.  This year also honors the St. Lawrence Markets 205th & the City of Toronto’s 175th birthdays. Form 1812 we will take you into the future to1834and Mackenzie.

Included with your theatre experience and to make the event as authentic as possible, we have food that would have been offered at an event such as this. The cheeses have been chosen because of their availability in the 1800’s in Canada.  The fruit would have been a result of the fall harvest but the bread is a history lesson on its own. The wheat is being stone ground in the method used at that time. The bread itself will be baked by students attending the “Canadian Food History – a Toronto Museum Experience” course at George Brown Chef School using recipes from the era. As a finishing touch, they are also producing ‘home made’ preserves using fruit, that although not beautiful to look at, and therefore not acceptable for sale in our stores, makes mouth watering condiments to grace our tables and helps the farmers to use all of their produce.
